Discover Your Imagination Sculpture for East Kingston Elementary School

Art Teacher, Merrilyn San Soucie, had a dream to create a dynamic artwork for a large exterior wall of East Kingston Elementary School. “Every time I looked at that wall, I knew we had to create art for it!” As a component of our school wide theme for the year, IMAGINATION, teaching artist C. M. Judge was invited to East Kingston Elementary School to help the students design a large scale relief sculpture that would enhance this wall that faces the road.

It was obvious to both Ms. San Soucie and Ms. Judge that each and every student, all 155 of them, needed to participate directly in the brainstorming, planning, designing and painting of the artwork. Working with the idea that architecture and images play an important part in establishing a building’s function and identity in a community, students set about creating models of different ideas they imagined would celebrate their school and share the many wonderful things that happen in their building everyday with the public.

Deciding on how to use our resources wisely became another focus as we worked on creating a dynamic composition for the sculpture. Students created models and used cards cut to scale to work on the best placement of the artwork on the wall. Finally, each student was asked to paint their very own portion of the sculpture with an image that they felt expressed their “imagination.”

A public art project of this magnitude required many people throughout the community to collaborate on the seeing this artwork through to its completion. Students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents and community volunteers all came together to help. What was once an empty long gray wall is now filled with the talent and joy of the children who grow and learn each day at East Kingston Elementary School.
